Somewhere between MileHunter and FareHunter I noticed I was tracking my trips the same way I used to track my Miles & More status: badly, in a spreadsheet, with no visual to show for it. I knew roughly how many countries I’d visited. I didn’t know exactly — and a spreadsheet row for a three-leg train journey through three countries never felt like it told the real story.

So I built PinHunter.

What PinHunter Does

PinHunter is a travel tracker: log the countries and cities you’ve visited, plan trips with real stops and hotels, and watch it all fill in on an interactive world map.

  • A map that fills in: every visited country gets coloured in, every city gets a coordinate-based pin — no more guessing your own count
  • Trips with real stops: a trip is 1:n stops, so a train ride through three countries becomes three clean legs instead of one vague line
  • Hotels per stop: name, address, check-in/out, and price, nested directly in the leg it belongs to — a complete travel record, not just a pin
  • Wishlist toggle: mark a country as “want to visit” and flip it to visited the moment you land
  • Milestones and badges: five categories, four tiers each, if you like your progress gamified
  • Data export, always: full JSON export of your countries, cities, and trips — free in every plan, any time

Why It Started as a Spreadsheet Problem

The generic “countries I’ve visited” apps I tried all stopped at the country level — no cities, no trip detail, no hotels. The alternative was a spreadsheet, which is fine for data but terrible for the thing that actually matters here: seeing it. I wanted the structure of a real database (country → trip → stop → hotel) and the visual payoff of a map that actually fills in as you go. That combination didn’t exist bundled together, so PinHunter is that bundle.

Where It Stands Today

PinHunter is live at pinhunter.ch. Free tracking is unlimited and local to your browser, with full export any time. A Pro plan adds cloud sync across devices for 12 CHF/year.

Same approach as MileHunter and FareHunter: built for a problem I had myself, shipped, and improved based on what people actually ask for.
